The Cadillac was fitted with a compartment to fast and furious auto carry the RTV, and a retractable ramp was built into the floor to assist in its deployment. When his colleagues refused to believe his warnings of Gozer’s potential return, Egon Spengler stole all of the team’s equipment, including Ecto-1, and relocated to a farmhouse in Summerville, Oklahoma. The repaired Ectomobile is named on-screen with the license plate shown reading “Ecto-1”. The word Ectomobile was only used in the song “Cleaning Up The Town” from the film’s soundtrack. The filmmakers planned to have the Ecto-1 painted black, but the color of the vehicle was changed to white when it was decided a black car would be too difficult to see during night scenes.

It had a 6.3-liter V8, 320 horsepower, and an air suspension system. The Ferno-Washington gurney held the proton-packs, and a series of avionics gauges were souped-up into ghost detectors and spirit containment traps. But basically, forget the backstory from the 80’s Ghostbusters movies because the new one starts fresh. Seeing the new Ecto-1 has made us more excited to see the sequel. We don’t think we’ll be able to suppress our yells when we finally see it on the big screen again.

Ghostbusters (2016 Film)

After the release of Ghostbusters, The Drive reports that Ecto-1 was seen driving through New York City with one of the Ghostbusters behind the wheel. As a result, multiple people were so awe-struck in traffic that it caused several accidents. Ecto-1 had not been properly maintained so it began to smoke and break down.

Janine Melnitz piloted the Ecto-2 to help save the Ghostbusters from Victor by providing cover fire and throwing them spare Proton Packs. The Ecto-2 was rebuilt and later refurbished when the Ghostbusters were briefly the Crimebusters. Since they were making more money than they could spend, the Ecto-2 was upgraded. It had an enclosed cockpit, seating for four, and a Particle Thrower mounted on the roof at the base of the rotor.

Finally, the restoration team updated all the rooftop gadgets with modern bulbs and electric motors. The film crew eventually purchased a 1959 Cadillac series 62. It had been converted into an ambulance by the Miller-Meteor company in Piqua, Ohio, which built limousines, ambulances, and hearses. Instead, in one of the many ways the original Ghostbusters script was changed, the 1959 Miller-Meteor was chosen. However, the 1975 ambulance would end up being the inspiration for the Ecto-1 used in the 2016 reboot; it was a 1984 Cadillac Fleetwood hearse of a similar design to the ’75 ambulance. If you want to get to know the new cast a little better ahead of its July 11 release, there are also five short intros on the characters and actors portraying them.

Except at some point Chris Hemsworth gets brought on. He doesn’t do much in this first trailer, so maybe he’s just around as beefcake. Obviously we can’t glean every detail of a two-hour movie from a two-minute trailer, and I’m sure our friends at io9 will do a complete deconstruction soon. This limited edition Ecto-1 Transformer is a great addition to any Ghostbuster’s collection. At the time, the tail fins of the 1959 Cadillac Futura Duplex were the largest to appear on a production car, giving this unique car an even more memorable appearance. For the new movie, ECTO-1 is also a Cadillac again, and it’s a Reagan-era Fleetwood hearse—probably something that would have actually been in service in real life while the original Ghostbusters was in theaters. And besides Ecto-1’s new look as a car that is clearly a hearse, instead of the more ambiguous previous model, is much more fitting with the ghost motif. This movie features a number of updates from the 1984 film, both in the new cast and in 2016 mega budget effects but the Ecto-1 has been upgraded from the iconic 1959 Cadillac ambulance to  a 1982 Cadillac DeVille hearse. Ecto 1 was a run-down, busted, old Cadillac ambulance that the original crew turned into the ectomobile. When you are carrying around proton packs to ghost emergencies, a hearse design is perfect. The Ecto-1 was designed by Stephen Dane who also designed the many iconic gadgets including the Ghostbusters’ signature proton pack, the ghost trap, the P.K.E. meter, and more. So much of what makes Ghostbusters iconic is because of this designer.
